It’s not every day you get to handle
outsized cargo for 747 Freighters
BBE
is proud of its ability to rise to meet every challenge, no matter how
small, big or unusual the challenge may be. During repairs to the longest
runway at the Calgary International Airport, BBE got another opportunity
to prove just how well they could adapt to a wide variety of air cargo
challenges, including 747s.
From September 21 to September 30, Cargolux, an all-cargo airline based
out of Luxemburg, redirected its big cargo lifters to the Edmonton International
Airport, where BBE was responsible for handling the outbound and inbound
cargo shipments. The company had considered rerouting their planes to
Vancouver International Airport, but changed their minds after they met
with BBE. “We were sold on their service right away,” says
Cargolux’s Calgary representative Don Hill. “When we walked
in, we were greeted in a professional way, they had a good, clean warehouse
facility with a great security system and all the equipment to handle
our needs. Their people were friendly and helpful.”
While runway repairs were underway in Calgary, BBE handled five Cargolux
747-400 Freighter flights and close to 600,000 pounds of freight. The
Cargolux 747s are the biggest freight planes on a regular route, and the
cargo BBE handled ranged from oversized oil field equipment to live horses.
“We made some adjustments for that particular live animal flight,”
explains BBE’s Edmonton Manager, Business Development, Dragos Niculescu. “We used
our most experienced crew to unload the horses, and we built special stalls
to accommodate them. We also had to make use of some special equipment
for some of the other freight we handled.”
“At BBE, there was no humming and hawing. BBE’s crew said,
‘Tell us what you need and we will do it,’” says Hill.
“We would definitely use BBE again should the opportunity present
itself, and will gladly share our experience with other carriers.”
