A Christmas donation to Food Rescue Yellowknife
In the spirit of the holidays, BBE is supporting a local charity in lieu of sending Christmas cards to clients and business associates.
Over the past several years, BBE has supported charitable organizations, such as the Salvation Army, or adopted families in need during the Christmas season. This year, they have chosen to make a donation to Food Rescue Yellowknife.
ìWe feel our clients will value this donation as their Christmas gift more than they would enjoy receiving a Christmas card from us,î said Gary Reid, President of BBE. “Donating to Food Rescue Yellowknife provides a lasting community contribution that extends beyond the Christmas season and itís also more eco-friendly than a paper Christmas card.”
Food Rescue Yellowknife is a registered charity that works to distribute suitable food, that would otherwise end up in the landfill, from grocery stores, food warehouses and restaurants to various agencies that support individuals and families in need.
“By donating to Food Rescue Yellowknife, we are able to touch more than one organization because the food they distribute is spread throughout the community,” said Terrilyn Hayden of the BBE Yellowknife office, who organized the donation on behalf of the company.
Hayden also pointed out that because Food Rescue focuses on distributing fresh food, rather than the usual canned or boxed items that are often donated to charity, it results in a healthier meal for the organizations they support, such as the Salvation Army, the Centre for Northern Families and school breakfast programs, among others.
“While Food Rescue relies on volunteers to collect and distribute food products, we look to the community of Yellowknife for our operating costs,” said Ruby Trudel, Director of Food Rescue Yellowknife. “Without the support of organizations such as BBE, Food Rescue could not continue to operate and provide this essential service to the community.”
In 2009 over 129,000 lbs of food was distributed to 15 agencies and programs by Food Rescue Yellowknife. It is anticipated that over 200,000 lbs of food will be distributed in 2010.
