BBE adds Alberta COR standard to safety achievements

BBE is expanding on the Certificate of Recognition (COR) they recently received for the NWT and Nunavut offices by now obtaining a COR through the Alberta Safety Council for their Alberta branches.

“I believe that the COR stands as a confirmation that BBE not only talks about safety, but we believe in it and implement it in the workplace,” said Dragos Niculescu, Regional Manager of BBE Business Development in Western Canada.

COR is an occupational health and safety program accreditation for industry employers and is the highest distinction available to contractors. Having a COR verifies that BBE has a fully implemented and effective health and safety program that meets national standards.

“The COR represents great outstanding achievement by workers and the management team in compliance with government occupational health and safety standards,” said Veronica Bujold, BBE Corporate Safety Coordinator, who was instrumental in accomplishing the COR.

To achieve the COR, an internal audit of BBE’s health and safety program was completed. Niculescu and Bujold both worked with the Alberta Safety Council to improve on BBE health and safety protocols and to create a manual and set of procedures going forward. Training segments were conducted with staff members, while the Alberta Safety Council external auditors performed random site visits and staff interviews to ensure that the protocols are being adhered to.

“When it comes to employees, the COR raises awareness and eliminates complacency because the procedures are in place to enforce the health and safety program, such as weekly meetings and safety discussions,” said Niculescu.

Not only is the COR important to BBE staff and management, but it’s also very important to clients.

“Having COR is a big factor in our ability to bid on contracts. Clients will ask you to see it because it is a standard tool for them to use to know that we have a health and safety program and that we are recognized on a national level. Often times in today’s business world a smaller company is unable to qualify to bid on contracts unless they have COR certification,” said Bujold.
